Dubai - For the third month in a row, Dubai’s international airport has recorded double-digit growth (10.7 per cent) in passenger traffic.
Dubai International, which has a current capacity limit of 60m passengers a year, saw a monthly passenger throughput exceeding 3.7m for the second time this year, following the record-breaking 3.76m passengers recorded in July.
“Aviation here has defied the global trend and this is testament to the attractiveness of Dubai not just as a transit hub but also as an international destination for both business and tourism,” says Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths.
“Dubai International is the only airport among the top ten airports in terms international passenger traffic to still record positive growth,” adds Griffiths.
Dubai’s airports are currently expanding with Phase One, passenger terminal capable of handling nine million passengers a year, due to open in June 2010. When Phase Two is finished, Al Maktoum Airport will become the home of Emirates, which carries 20 million passengers annually.
The Airports Council International, meanwhile, reports registering a worldwide year-to-date drop of seven per cent in passenger numbers.
