Yacht shows boom despite recession

World - The organisers of the Monaco Yacht Show and Dutch marine equipment show METS 2009, which incorporates a large SuperYacht Pavilion, say they have both sailed against the current to record high visitor figures.

Informa, which organises the Monaco show, 24-26 September, claims to have had more yachts and exhibitors this year than ever before, doubling the number of double-deck pavilions to showcase yachting and high-end product companies such as Oceanco, PeriniNavi, Lürssen and Amels.

Meanwhile the METS 2009 exhibition, held on 17-19 November and organised by Amsterdam RAI in association with the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, has 1,232 confirmed exhibitors, on course to be the largest METS to date.

“In these troubled economic times, we were definitely not expecting a record number of exhibitors for METS 2009,” says senior product manager, Irene Dros, describing the show as a “beacon of hope” and evidence that the marine equipment industry is being proactive in “pushing through to brighter times”.

This year’s METS will be one of the first exhibition at the RAI to take advantage of the recently completed Elicium conference building.
