EW runs down a spate of projects helping Thailand’s capital compete
Thailand’s hedonistic epicentre, Bangkok, is regaining its global business audience after a dip following a military coup in 2014.
Further incentivising companies is an improved common market (the Asean Economic Community (AEC)) tapping into more than US$2.6tn. Infrastructure investment is also rife, with plans for an 867km China-to-Thailand rail link which could provide a further boom in visitors.
For exhibitions, the climate is as hot as the city’s year round sun. IMPACT Muang Thong Thani plans to invest over 10bn baht worth of structure projects that will promote a tourism hub in the centre. Opening for the business in March, the four-storey building, The Portal, provides a connection to/from IMPACT Challenger.
With an area of 9,000sqm, the building consists of restaurants, commercial rooms and a Portal Ballroom with a 1,150sqm versatile space.
Elsewhere, Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center (BITEC) is building a Bhiraj Tower at BITEC on the vicinity of the centre. Meeting rooms, restaurants, food courts, and retail stores will be part of the office building. The construction for the BITEC expansion project is completed, and exhibition halls (EH 98-100) are ready for events of all types on the ground floor.
The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) is also busy, and will upgrade and expand its existing facilities which include the convention complex, space for conferences, a commercial area, and car parking space.
