NASA backs Silicon Valley Expo bid

USA - NASA has backed Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s bid to host the 2020 World Expo.

Representatives of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, federal landlords of Moffett Field in Silicon Valley, California, said the organisation would take an active role as part of the organising team.

“If they can put this together and win the bid, NASA would be willing and able to be part of the team,” said Lewis Braxton, deputy director of NASA’s Ames Research Centre, which sits on the 1,800-acre property.

“It was a bit of a surprise, but we are all elated because NASA Ames is all about being at the forefront of technology, and world fairs have always demonstrated what the world can look like 50 years into the future.”

Schwarzenegger is expected to bid for the 2020 World Expo on behalf of Silicon Valley during his visit to the Shanghai World Expo this week.

The World Expo is held every five years, and the 2015 event will take place in Milan.
