Iraqi construction fair to accelerate civic regeneration

IRAQ – Erbil will host one of Iraq’s largest construction sector trade fairs this month as the country’s demand for private sector housing grows.

The Project Iraq trade fair, taking place for the third time on 27–30 September, will unite 300 international exhibitors with around 50,000 professional visitors including engineers, contractors, traders and officials project managers.

The general manager of event organiser IFP Iraq, Fady Darwish, said: “With US$25bn in housing projects, $8bn in transportation and $5.5bn in water and sewage, the Iraqi Government is focusing primarily on reconstruction and rehabilitation. Several new cement plants are being either revamped or erected to satisfy a growing need and major international players are now present.

“We have decided to dedicate a standalone show because of the rising need for construction solutions,” he added.

The Iraqi government has decided to build one million new housing units as part of its 2010-2014 development plan, estimating 85 per cent of home building will be carried out by the private sector and foreign investments.
