Demonstrators protest fossil fuels at World Energy Congress

CANADA - Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Montréal on 12 September for the opening of the World Energy Congress (WEC).

One group of demonstrators, organised by Greenpeace, smeared themselves in molasses to draw attention to the devastating consequences of oil spills.

Running from 12 to 16 September 2010, conference and exhibition WEC aims to bring together more than 3,500 people from industry, government, media, universities and international organisations to discuss energy issues and potential solutions.

Greenpeace campaigner Julien Vincent said: “As the dirty energy industry descends on Montreal for the Energy Congress, the message is clear: we desperately need an energy revolution, moving beyond oil and other dirty fuels to power our future with clean, renewable energy.”
