Trekkies descend on convention in search of record

USA - The annual Star Trek Convention is under way once again at the Hilton in Las Vegas this weekend, where 15,000 fans are hoping to make history.

An odd assortment of Klingons, Ferengi, Vulcans and Cardassians are expected at the four-day event, where they’ll mingle with former cast members including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Sir Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner and George Takei.

This year’s highlight will be an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest single gathering of people dressed as characters from the Star Trek universe. The current record stands at 508, achieved at a recent convention in Germany.

The record-breaking attempt will begin Saturday at 9am.
