WORLD - Hong Kong-based airlines Cathy Pacific Airways and Dragonair and electronic company Panasonic Avionics have signed a memorandum of agreement to install broadband into flights starting in 2012.
Panasonic Avionics will install its eXConnect technology, which will allow passengers broadband internet access, voice, data and run at speeds of up to 50Mbps. An eXPhone GSM phone service will enable passengers to use mobile phones.
“We believe that being connected is now an expected part of everyday life, not just for business purposes but also to stay in touch with family and friends,” says the head of product for the airline, Alex McGowan. “This system will allow passengers to be in touch as they wish to be while enjoying the Cathay Pacific and Dragonair service.”
The airline also hopes to install pay-per-view access and live television via this connectivity in passengers’ seatback screens, however, all the technology has yet to be approved by the regulatory body.
