Tanzania trade fair sees exhibitor number plunge

TANZANIA – This year’s Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair has seen exhibitor numbers drop by more than half compared with previous editions.

According to Samwel Mvingira, director of research and planning of the Board of External Trade (BET), the organisers of the fair, only 902 exhibitors had expressed interest in participating compared to the 1,930 exhibitors attracted to the 2008 edition.

Acting director of export and promotion, Mfaume Juma, attributes the drop to the show’s larger exhibitors, who he says have bought up all the exhibition space.

“One exhibitor might be taking a huge space,” he says. “But in terms of companies participating, we have a smaller number.”

The show runs from 28 June to 8 July at the Mwalimu Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds.
