NRA convention success prompts bid for Democratic event

USA  - The Charlotte Convention Centre is to bid for the Democratic National Convention, the week after hosting the predominantly republican National Rifle Association’s (NRA) annual convention.

City officials estimate the NRA convention drew close to 80,000 attendees over the weekend, bringing around US$20m to Charlotte’s economy. A spokesman for the Charlotte Regional Visitor's Authority said the event, which was televised around the world, gave the Charlotte Convention Centre a spotlight on the global stage. City authorities now hope to win the Democratic National Convention.

"We were absolutely full, every inch of the Charlotte Convention Centre used. That's the type of event we would love to have every weekend if we could,” said the spokesman.

The city puts its bid in for the Democratic National Convention next week.
