Clifford Rippetoe (pictured), CEO of the San Diego Convention Center, has issued a statement regarding the expansion to the site, after its planned funding fell through:
"I am proud to be the President and CEO of the world-class San Diego Convention Center.
"While all of us here are disappointed that the current funding initiative will not be on the ballot this November, we will continue to work on a solution to meet the needs of additional space. We know that additional, contiguous space meets our customers' needs, brings more visitors to San Diego, adds tax revenue and increases economic impact for the region.
"Today's outcome is not a 'No,' it's just 'Not Now.'
"Our team will continue to deliver on our promise of providing our clients outstanding customer service in one of the top destinations in the United States. We are working on a master plan to update and modernize our existing facility.
"Our purpose remains unchanged. We continue to strive to be the region's premier gathering place for meetings, conventions and trade shows as well as community events. Our team continues to be among the highest-rated Convention Centers in the industry, not only in service, but in food and beverage catering and technology. We hear from our customers time and time again that their attendees want to come to San Diego: a world-class Convention Center in a walkable destination that offers great food and hotel options, has world-renowned attractions and a region rich with biotech, life sciences and startups.
"San Diego offers the complete package.
"And while this expansion effort is delayed, I will not stop championing for the needs of our customers and our community.
"We will continue to be creative with our space and offer new ways for our customers to excite attendees about coming to San Diego and the San Diego Convention Center.
"Thank you."
