As Hong Kong celebrates 20 years of independence from the British, EW examines the exhibition facilities that help it stand out globally

After nine months of preparation, the team at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HML) completed the conclusion of the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s Return to the Motherland, attended by President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China.

The event was also historic for the 950-member HML team, who once again took on an event they had handled 20 years earlier.

The anniversary has given pause for reflection on Hong Kong’s successes, and its exhibition market has much cause for celebration. 20 years might be a blink of an eye colonially, but it is a long time in events, and Hong Kong is renowned for its expertise.

The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, located on the renowned Victoria Harbour, opened in 1988 and contains 306,000sqm meeting and exhibition space. More than 45,000 events have been hosted at the venue.

Meanwhile, AsiaWorld-Expo, which opened in late 2005, now offers more than 70,000sqm of exhibition space, including 10 ground-level, column-free exhibition halls with high ceiling clearance of 10-19 metres.

The AsiaWorld-Expo, Arena is equipped with premium acoustic panelling systems, modular seating systems and dedicated backstage facilities.

Hong Kong, famous for its free market, is a limited democracy based on English Common Law.

The People’s Republic of China maintains control over its foreign and defence policies, but Hong Kong has freedom of governance in its financial and social affairs.
