China’s lack of health and safety awareness is ‘very obvious’, according to Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNEIC)’s general manager Michael Kruppe.

As part of a presentation at UFI’s 11th Open Seminar in Asia 2016, Kruppe told audiences that effective storytelling is important to convey the consequences of a lack of proper health and safety practices.

Out of more than 200 venues in China, most do not have health and safety procedures in place, Kruppe said. “There is a lack of awareness of the consequences and a lack of skills and qualifications for contractors,” he added.

Speaking about Shanghai, which is aiming to become the world’s leading exhibition destination, Kruppe said there is an increasing number of shows and along with that, an increased demand for health and safety.

Issues Kruppe wants China to address include unqualified workers, lack of awareness of the dangers when putting on events, food safety in restaurants and training.
