Italy lifts ban on crocodile meat for Expo Milan

Visitors to Zimbabwe’s pavilion at Expo Milan’s are snapping up crocodile burgers after a ban on selling the meat was temporarily lifted.

Zimbabwe, the world’s largest exporter of crocodile meat, is enticing diners with its CrocoBurger, created exclusively for the expo.

Expo officials said it was the first time the meat had been imported directly from Zimbabwe.

The country has reportedly shipped more than one tonne of crocodile meat to feed hungry visitors, with more on standby.

“We're happy to present such a particular product at Expo Milano 2015,” said Georges El Badaoui, Zimbabwe's consul in italy.

“We've carried out many checks and can truly say that it is a safe and certified product.

“We hope to increase its distribution in Italy in the catering sector as soon as possible,” El Badaoui added.

Officials said a partnership had already been set up to create Italian products with crocodile meat, including filets preserved in extra virgin olive oil.

More than 15 million tickets have been sold for the food-themed Expo Milan, which is open until 31 October.
