Adult expo sues venue, city, ex-mayor

USA – The organiser of Adult entertainment industry trade show Exxxotica has filed a lawsuit against Secaucus New Jersey Town Administrator David Drumeler, ex-Secaucus mayor Dennie Elwell and Hartz Mountain, owner of the Meadowlands Exposition Centre.

The lawsuit follows the 2008 show, when the defendants allegedly barred the “adult-themed public tradeshow” from the Meadowlands Exposition Centre, but refused to return the show’s US$32,500 deposit.

According to the lawsuit, Exxxotica was forced to move only seven days before opening when Secaucus authorities told organiser Victory Tradeshow Management that the show would be barred because “the exhibitions and activities scheduled to take place would be obscene and lewd.”

However, the suit alleges that Exxxotica “expressly advised defendants of the nature of various products that would be sold and certain performances and demonstrations that the show anticipated to take place,” to which organisers claim “at no time did representatives of Hartz Mountain, or its agent SMG, express any reservations about the proposed content of the tradeshow.”

The suit says that prior to signing the lease, Exxxotica corresponded with Meadowlands management to “inquire whether they were aware of any state and/or local laws that might be an impediment to the service of alcohol at the Tradeshow”, to which management responded that “the tradeshow was acceptable, appropriate and permitted at the venue.”

Four days before the event, Exxxotica moved to the New Jersey Expo Centre, nearly 30 miles from the original venue.

Exxxotica New Jersey is now in its third year and still takes place at the New Jersey Expo Centre in Edison, New Jersey. The next edition is set to take place from 5 to 7 November, 2010.
