AUSTRALIA - Hosting an international expo in Sydney in 2017 would be worth more than the World Cup in 2022, according to former Olympics minister Michael Knight.
Knight said an international expo would force the city to update its exhibition infrastructure, leading to better long-term benefits.
“For the big conventions and exhibitions, Sydney is competing with other cities in the region like Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur,” he explained. “But Darling Harbour [Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre] is now short of exhibition space.”
Bidding for the 2017 Expo is due to begin next year.
