Singapore casino complex settles its legal gamble with IPBA

SINGAPORE – EW's sister publication CMW reported in May that the Marina Bay Sands resort development in Singapore had issued a writ against organisers of one of the first conventions at the new venue, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA).

The IPBA had withheld payment in full of the bill and counter-claimed, alleging the venue was unfinished, resulting in blackout, jammed lifts, and toilets that couldn’t flush.

Now, three months on, the Sands’ lawyers and the lawyers’ group have reached agreement suspending legal action.

The negative publicity marred the June official opening of the US$5.5bn complex.

Although details of the legal deal remain confidential, a joint statement by both parties said, in part that Marina Bay Sands, “regrets the unfortunate incidents that affected the conference held at its facilities”.

Sources close to the case believe IPBA is to receive a discount on its bill.
