Tourism Innovation Summit addresses how AI can patch together a fragmented industry

The Tourism Innovation Summit 2024 has just concluded in Seville, Spain. Running from 23-25 October, the event brought together nearly 8,000 attendees to discuss the latest trends sweeping through the tourism industry – most notably, AI and big data.

The event was held under the slogan ‘Elevating the travel industry with tech’. 221 companies exhibited new technologies powered by AI and data science that are set to change how tourists plan and experience their trips.

One of TIS2024’s keynote speakers was Ash Bhardwaj, journalist and filmmaker, who explained his own perspective on what the real drivers of tourism are. These included curiosity, a sense of belonging and the desire for personal growth.

CEO and founder of Geotourist, Shaon Talukder also took to the stage to address issues in the tourism sector. One of the topics he discussed was the fragmentation of the tourism sector – an issue which, in Talukder’s view, is caused in large part by a lack of consistent visitor data.

He explained to delegates how the industry must move from siloed data to a singular ecosystem to overcome this fragmentation. To achieve this, AI will be a crucial tool. Technology should be able to help manage the mass influx of tourists to popular places, optimise journeys and personalise recommendations, Taludker claimed.

The event featured 416 speakers in total, tackling topics such as sustainability and responsible tourism as well as tech innovation. Uniting the two topics, attendees agreed that technological innovation is the key to achieving a more sustainable form of tourism.
