Although Switzerland’s third-largest city has a population of just 200,000 and a surface area of only 37 km2, it nonetheless boasts a vibrant social and cultural life, as well as one of the world’s most productive economies.
Basel’s appeal stems, on the one hand, from its unique position at the point where three countries meet – offering direct access to all the key transport routes and the world’s oceans – and, on the other hand, from its longstanding tradition as a science and research location. It is thus hardly surprising that those in charge took the decision to hold their conference in this city on the Rhine.
