The City of Nuremberg withdrew its permission, 19 October, for the holding of the annual consumer goods Consumenta 2020 tradefair, citing the rising number of infections in the city and throughout Bavaria for the short notice of the decision. Many of the 650 exhibitors for the nine-day exhibition had already started build up for the show.
“We very much regret that Consumenta cannot take place. We are convinced that Consumenta would have been an important signal for the regional economy right now and that the hygiene concept developed with the responsible authorities would have made a safe visit to the fair possible for everyone,” said a statement by brothers Henning and Thilo Könicke, managing directors of Consumenta organiser AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen in Nürnberg.
Consumenta, which had been due to open on 24 October at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center, would have been the first tradefair to be held at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center since March and was long awaited by exhibitors, visitors and the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. “A successful tradefair restart with Consumenta would also have been of existential importance for other economic sectors in Nuremberg, such as service companies, exhibition stand builders, retailers, the hotel and gastronomy industry," the Könicke brothers added.
