SINGEX CHAIRMAN HAILS ASIA PACIFIC TURNAROUND

SINGAPORE - Chairman of the Singapore Expo (Singex) conference and exhibition venue Bob Tan has described the outlook for 2011 and beyond in the Singapore and Asian MICE business as “promising”.

Tan was speaking at a luncheon, 8 February, held at Singex in honour of the new Lunar Year of the Rabbit.

There had been a strong economic turnaround in the Asia-Pacific region in 2010, said Tan, “and, at the same time, rising regional competition for the MICE dollar. Notwithstanding this, Singapore  continues to be Asia’s destination of choice for event organisers and business travellers”.

Singex, he said, had held strong “and secured its fair share of the business”, welcoming over six million visitors and 600 events to Singex in 2010, including the International Furniture Fair Singapore, Food and Hotel Asia and Herbalife Asia Pacific Extravaganza. He estimated foreign visitors to Singex had generated S$0.5bn (US$0.39bn) for the local economy. He described the figure as “a stellar result”.
“The format of business events is evolving to derive maximum ROI for business events,” Tan said. “More concurrent activities are now held alongside the main convention or exhibition. This has spurred demand for more flexible and focused venue settings.”

Singex recently announced that its new convention wing, offering 23 new meeting rooms and spacious pre-function areas will be completed by early 2012.
