Cairns Convention Centre not affected by Cyclone Yasi

AUSTRALIA - The management of the Cairns Convention Centre, AEG Ogden, says the centre has been unaffected by the Cyclone Yasi, which hit the North Australian coastline on 2 Febraury 2011.

“While our hearts go out to communities south of Cairns, our staff, their homes and the Cairns Convention Centre have been unaffected and it is business as usual,” said the centre’s GM, Ross Steele.

“We appreciate the many emails, text messages and telephone calls we have received from throughout the meetings industry and would like to thank our colleagues, clients and friends, ”  he added.

AEG Ogden manages venues throughout the Asia Pacific region, including Sydney’s Acer Arena, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre,  the Newcastle Entertainment Centre, and the Perth Arena (currently under construction); the Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centres, the Qatar National Convention Centre (currently under construction),  as well as Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Less than a month ago Australia was widely-affected by the flooding, which flooded parts of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. The flooding, which covered an area estimated to be the combined size of France and Germany, is estimated to have killed at least 31 people with many more missing. Over 200,000 people have been affected and the clean up cost is estimated at AU$20bn (US$20bn).
