Brisbane centre closed due to extreme weather

AUSTRALIA - The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre is cancelling all events due to the ongoing floods devatating parts of Queensland, despite Tourism Australia stressing that the country is still open for business.

The flash floods and widespread flooding that has affected the states of southwest Queensland and northern New South Wales is estimated to have killed at least 19 people with more than 78 missing at the time of writing. Over 200,000 people have been affected by this natural disaster and the cost has run into the billions of dollars.

As the floods move into the state’s capital Brisbane, thousands of people have been urged to leave their homes and move into evacuation centres. Officials estimate over 6,000 homes and business are “set to flood” in the state capital alone.

The convention centre has closed its doors and cancelled all events until at least 17 January, when conditions will be re-evaluated. Staff do not have access to email and will also have to check the website to see when they must return to work.

Brisbane Airport is open, as are all airports in Queensland except Rockhampton.

The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre has also postponed many events including the National Finals Rodeo 2011, which will be rescheduled for April. It is not known whether the national tattoo convention, Surf n’ Ink Australia 2011 Gold Coast, 21-23 January 2011, will be cancelled.

CEO of meetings industry association, Meetings and Events Australia, Linda P. Gaunt, says on behalf of the board of directors, management and staff of MEA, “I send our sympathies to our members who have been impacted by the flood devastation over parts of Queensland”.

“The Australian Government is providing assistance to communities affected by the floods and will continue to work with the Queensland Government in providing support,” says a Tourism Australia spokesperson. “While visitors are urged to avoid the flood affected areas of Queensland and other states, Australia remains open for business and continues to welcome travellers.”
