SCOTLAND - AECC has received £1m from the Aberdeen City Council to fund the extension of its car park and the foundations for a special temporary exhibition structure.
A temporary De Boer Delta structure will add more exhibition space to accommodate growing demands of Offshore Europe, the venue’s biggest event.
“The way they build the structure it almost totally occupies our whole car park, so there was no ideal way to extend the space,” said AECC MD, Brian Horsburgh.
“They are using this more sophisticated structure and it requires a more substantial foundation, so we are adding these into the car park for them to use the space. The added parking space will be valuable to us for other events as well.”
While the AECC has only 10,000sqm of permanent exhibition space, temporary structures set up for Offshore Europe add an additional 40,000sqm.
Finance and resources convener Cllr Kevin Stewart said: “AECC is one of the key drivers of our economy, so investing in a successful venue that pumps millions of pounds worth of business into local pockets makes perfect economic sense.”
Construction is planned to be completed by July 2011, in time for the September 2011 edition of Offshore Europe.
Earlier this month the Council voted to replace the AECC’s chairman and board.
