Thieves descend on Hong Kong gem fair

CHINA – Gems worth US$1m were reportedly stolen on the first day of UBM Asia’s Hong Kong International Jewellery and Gem Fair.

According to reports, two men were arrested for allegedly stealing a seven-carat diamond worth $450,000 and replacing it with a fake on Tuesday at the five-day exhibition.

An emerald necklace worth $500,000 was also stolen from another stand, and thieves took pearls worth a total of $25,000 in two other separate incidents.

Running between 14 and 18 September at the AsiaWorld Expo and Convention Centre, the jewellery fair includes displays from 3,200 exhibitors and is expected to draw 40,000 visitors.
