Germany’s second city, Hamburg has launched a set of locally devised business support initiatives in response to Covid-19.
Hamburg Convention Bureau has gathered a series of these positive stories and initiatives from the meetings and events industry.
First is the forum #wirstehenzusammen – or ‘we stand together’, launched by Hamburg Tourism Board, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation of Hamburg, DEHOGA Hamburg, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the Hamburg Tourismusverband.
The forum is designed to provide a platform for tourism service providers to exchange ideas, advice and experience and support each other through collaboration. Topics discussed include how to deal with reductions in working hours and drastic cuts in business.
Nivea’s parent company Beiersdorf, which is based in the city, has produced 500 tons of disinfectant used to fight the coronavirus. Beiersdorf is working closely with clinics and hospitals, medical and nursing staff as well as police and fire departments to supply them with product.
And a new online TV channel has launched with the aim of bringing the city’s community together. One Hamburg livestreams panels, live podcasts, news, interviews and concerts in what, it is hoped, will become a long-term digital offering for the city.
#paynoweatlater is an initiative founded by food entrepreneurs in Hamburg that allows people to buy vouchers for local restaurants which can be redeemed once outlets re-open. This gives local businesses an immediate boost, helping them to cover their fixed costs.
#hamburgbringts is an initiative that enables Hamburg shop and restaurant owners offering a delivery service to apply for a free listing on the official portal of the city of Hamburg which is then promoted to residents.
Florian Gerdes, Marketing Manager Conventions at Hamburg Convention Bureau, says: “The impact of coronavirus has been felt across the world, hitting businesses and communities hard. In these challenging times, it’s particularly important to highlight the important work being done to support those in need. We’re proud to share these new initiatives which show the ingenuity and sheer collaborative power of Hamburg’s business community."
