Kolkata’s new Biswa Bangla Convention Centre (BBCC) in India is reporting a good pipeline of bookings, with names including Herbalife.

The centre, one of the largest convention centres in South Asia, was inaugurated earlier this month by chief minister Mamata Banerjee. “West Bengal has already proved its worth by hosting the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup successfully. Before Diwali the lamp of development is glowing in Bengal and Kolkata shines brighter than other cities,” the minister said.

“This convention centre is the new jewel in the crown of the state and of the country. The booking for the centre for 2019 has started already and that proves the industrial development in Bengal,” Banerjee added.

The convention centre has a 3,200-seater auditorium and is the biggest in Eastern India. The government has also appointed Apeejay Group, owner of the Park Hotel, to manage the hotel on the convention centre premises.

BBCC will host the Horasis Meet in November and the Bengal Global Business Summit in 2018.

Other forward bookings at the BBCC include Tata Medical Centre, Apollo and International TradeFacilitation Centre, as well as for a couple of medical societies.

The BBCC was constructed by the Larsen & Toubro under the supervision of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) at a cost over US$77m.
