A survey by AirHelp has ranked Singapore’s Changi airport as the world's top airport, with Kuwait Airport and Britain's Gatwick Airport languishing at the bottom end of the list.

Munich achieved second place in the list, with Hong Kong in third.

UK airports fared particularly badly in the rankings. The airports in Britain have been among the last to start using e-passport gates and, according to aviation analyst Alex Macheras, are “massively behind in terms of services and the speed of modernisation”.

The UK Airport Operations Association has claimed that £10bn worth of investment is planned over the next five years and says that the association is working with airlines  to ensure there is a framework to modernise the heavily congested UK airspace.

Gatwick blamed its poor showing on repeated strike action and heavily congested airspace, issues it said were outside of its control.

Marius Fermi, UK manager at AirHelp said of the research results: “This research should give airlines and airports, particularly in the UK, a nudge to improve their quality and punctuality urgently.
