Events across locations including Fort Lauderdale, Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti were cancelled following the caused by Hurricane Matthew.

The storm has killed at least 100 people in the Caribbean, spurring President Obama to declare a state of emergency for Florida.

Many hotels in the southeastern US closed in accordance with mandatory evacuations.

Events postponed due to the hurricane include The Neighborhood Design Criteria Revisions (NDCR) Open House, set to take place in Brewton Center Fort Lauderdale.

The York County Fall Festival in Pennsylvania has also been postponed and rescheduled for Saturday, 15 October.

In the Bahamas, Atlantis Paradise Island relocated guests and employees to the hurricane shelter in the resort's convention centre on Wednesday night as a safety precaution.

Sandals Emerald Bay took similar precautions last night. It tweeted that it "never lost power and guests are comfortable."

Elsewhere, Marriott International said its properties in Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti reported no direct impact from the storm and that the hotels were accepting guests.

As the Category 4 hurricane churned toward Florida, InterContinental Hotels Group closed many of its hotels in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Christine Roberts, VP, convention & group sales, Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB, told CMW that the safety of its residents and visitors is of paramount importance.

"Hurricane Matthew was a large and potentially dangerous hurricane that was forecast to impact South Florida on Thursday, 6 October. Starting early in the week, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau monitored the storm and was in close communication with hotels, planners, and the Broward County Convention Center to determine the best course of action with each group or event. We polled our hotels to ascertain available inventory in the area.

"Preventatively, a number of local events were cancelled for the weekend, guests (group and otherwise) were advised to depart earlier than anticipated, or in some cases groups were postponed entirely.  For those that were unable to depart the area, guests were given the opportunity to remain in their hotel or voluntarily be relocated to hotels further west from the beach and low lying areas."

The airports in Florida have now reopened, and officials are checking on the well-being of guests and communicating with planners with groups scheduled to arrive to advise them that our resorts and area have resumed normal business operations.
