Japan’s exhibition industry has voiced its fears over the closure of the country’s main exhibition venue, Tokyo Big Sight, during the Olympics in 2020.
The venue will be closed to exhibitions for 20 months from April 2019 to November 2020 while Tokyo Big Sight is converted and used as the media and broadcasting centre for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The only other large scale exhibition centre near Tokyo, Makuhari Messe, will also be used as an Olympics venue, and the only alternative will be to transfer all the exhibitions to Osaka.
The Japan Exhibition Association (JEXA) is collecting signatures for a petition that an alternative arrangement be found so that exhibitions can continue to be held as normal.
