Taiwan eyes up 2017 World Stage Design

ASIA - The organiser of World Stage Design has chosen Taiwan to host the 2017 edition of the international theatre design exhibition and competition.

Held every four years, the event includes the world congress for the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT), which has members in 50 countries and its headquarters in Taipei.

The World Stage Design includes an exhibition, a performance and design festival, workshops, seminars and theatre shows.

The 2017 edition is scheduled for 1-9 July at Taipei National University of the Arts, and is expected to attract theatre experts and representatives from more than 50 countries.

The first World Stage Design took place in Toronto in 2005. It was held in Seoul in 2009 and hosted by Cardiff, Wales in 2013.

According to the Taiwan Ministry of Culture, Taiwan beat China and the Philippines in the selection process for the host country, which involved three phases of screening.

Shen Lyushun, Republic of China (ROC) representative to the UK, said Taiwan has a rich history and diverse cultural heritage, especially as a repository of traditional Chinese culture.

“We have retained precious traditional characters, enabling our students to understand books from the Sung dynasty a millennium ago. Traditional culture has combined with later influences from Europe, Japan and the US,” he added.
