New venue in Istanbul for Hamburg Messe maritime expo

EUROPE - Venue and organiser Hamburg Messe has revealed its maritime technology expo will be moving to Green Park Pendik Hotel and Convention Center in Istanbul, Turkey, after a two-year gap.

The third SMM Istanbul - co-organised by Goca Exhibitions and HMC International - will run from 26 to 27 February 2014, moving from the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, Istanbul.

“The new venue is at the heart of the maritime industry in Istanbul, providing quicker contact to the relevant players in a perfect maritime setting,” said a spokesman from the organiser. "Thanks to its new date, now in the even-numbered years, SMM Istanbul is the first maritime event of the year in this region, seven months prior to SMM Hamburg.”

According to the organiser, Turkey is currently the sixth largest shipbuilding country in the world and the third worldwide in yacht building. By 2023, Turkey aims to have 16 new logistics centres, one of the ten largest ports in the world, and the 10th biggest economy with exports reaching US$500 million.

The previous SMM Istanbul was held in 2011 and attracted around 2,600 visitors from 40 countries and 138 exhibitors.

In other news, a subsidiary of Deutsche Messe, Hannover Fairs Turkey Fuarcilik, has partnered with Sektorel Fuarcilik, to co-organise its environmental energy event, ICCI.
