HKTDC looks to emerging markets following electronic fair success

ASIA - The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has reported a record high of 100,000 visitors at two of its electronic fairs.

Both electronic Asia and the autumn edition of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair were held on 13-16 October at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

According to the organiser, the Hong Kong Electronics Fair’s visitor attendance was up six per cent, with more than 68,000 buyers. HKTDC claimed attendance from the emerging markets surged, with visitors from Poland up by 38 per cent, Mexico 35 per cent, Malaysia 16 per cent and Israel 15 per cent.

More than 4,000 companies exhibited their electronics products, and services, including Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG and Intel.

HKTDC deputy executive director Benjamin Chau said that Hong Kong's electronics exports can expect moderate growth in the coming year, as reflected by the preliminary buyer statistics and survey results.

“Buyers and exhibitors alike are generally optimistic about the market's prospects," he said. "An increasing number of electronics products are incorporating new technology. The use of 3D printing in manufacturing is also becoming common place. As the cost of 3D printers drops, more small and medium-sized enterprises will be able to afford it, and sales will grow."

The organiser conducted a survey at the two electronics fairs, interviewing more than 1,000 exhibitors and buyers, and found that among emerging markets, exhibitors are particularly interested in Latin America, Russia and the ASEAN region. More than 90 per cent of the respondents believe that prospects in the coming year are better than or the same as 2013.
