Taipei Comic Expo hails record year

ASIA - Kuei Jung Exhibition has hailed this year’s Taipei Comic Exhibition a success, with a record visitor attendance of 582,000.

The comic expo was held at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Centre on 15-20 August, and surpassed last year’s 556,000 visitors. The organiser said the number of exhibitors also rose to 450 companies, up 10 per cent from last year.

The Taipei Times reported the event’s revenue increased to NT$250m (US$8.33m) up from NT$180m (US$6.01m) in 2012.

Roger Kao, secretary-general of the Taipei-based Chinese Animation and Comic Publishers Association, co-organiser of the event said this year featured more signing events than in previous shows, and more limited edition books and products were sold.

Kao commented that sales had also increased for products related to comic books by Taiwanese artists, as more of these artists promoted their books at the event this year.

“It is the first time that the number of Taiwanese artists attending the fair has surpassed the number of Japanese artists,” Kao said.

The expo featured 49 graphic artists, voice actors, animation directors and light novelists from Taiwan and Japan.
