India plans for new Madurai Convention Centre development

ASIA - Plans for a new convention centre in Avaniapuram, India have been proposed by the Mayor of the city, with 9.5 acres of land being identified for the development.

The announcement was made by the Mayor Rajan Chellappa during the 67th Independence Day celebrations. “Encroachments on the site have been removed and preliminary works will commence soon,” he told local reporters. "The tourism department has agreed to provide the funds and it will be a joint venture of the corporation and the district administration as well.

“The convention centre will have proper infrastructure to hold events and trade fairs and it will have spacious parking facilities and other basic amenities," he added.

At an estimated cost of Rs.6 crore (US$1.33m), the Madurai Convention Centre development is expected to be air-conditioned, provide enough space for tradeshows and conferences and provide adequate parking for delegates.

The development has been pushed by local trade associations, who argue that hosting events at the nearby Tamukkam grounds, where the majority of events are held, is too expensive.
