Interim Glebe Island Expo developments underway

AUSTRALASIA - Work is underway for the temporary events venue for the central business district of Sydney, the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island, ahead of its February 2014 opening. The space is scheduled for completion in January for readiness testing.

The interim Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is required to support the events industry while the new Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct is being built at Darling Harbour. It is due for completion in December 2016.

Air-conditioned and featuring 25,000sqm of event space, the space is located on the foreshore near the Anzac Bridge and will be serviced by a regular, scheduled ferry from Darling Harbour as well as shuttle buses from Central Station, providing delegates easy access to Darling Harbour hotels and dining and entertainment options.

The exhibition and events industry was briefed recently on the development, with the facility's GM Malu Barrios telling the 200-strong audience that from a slab of concrete they could expect something impressive.

"Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is like a blank canvas; it is an innovative space in the world's best harbour. Within a few months, Glebe Island will be transformed into a wonderful facility that will come to life with a full calendar of events and exhibitions," she said.

Managed by AEG Ogden, Asia-Pacific’s largest facility management company, the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is attracting strong support from event organisers, who have been consulting with the NSW Government throughout the planning and design process.

“BESydney has been working closely with the industry for many months on the new facility's branding and marketing and we will manage the consumer awareness campaign until the operators, AEG Ogden, take over at the end of 2013,” said BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith.
