Messe Stuttgart unveils plans for venue expansion

EUROPE - Landesmesse Stuttgart has revealed preliminary plans to expand the Filder region’s exhibition grounds.

The venue’s supervisory board met on 9 July with the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart, to discuss planning for a possible expansion of the venue.

The planning includes the building of a hall with 14,600sqm of exhibition space, and the west entrance expanding by around 3,000sqm, leading Messe Stuttgart to have a total of approximately 120,000sqm of exhibition space.

The management group said the current cost estimate for the expansion is around €67.5m (US$88.1m). Messe Stuttgart will finance the new building from its own resources.

"The result of the supervisory board meeting is for us a central prerequisite for a possible expansion of the grounds,” said Ulrich Kromer, management spokesperson of Messe Stuttgart. "A new hall would offer fresh prospects for further growth for many of our events, which are already reaching their capacity limits."

According to the management group, the building application needs to be submitted in October 2014 so that construction work will start in October 2015. The construction work and opening of the new building is expected for spring 2018.

Messe Stuttgart has recently secured a three-year deal with event organiser Inspire to host its Lounges and Vision Pharma shows.
