UBM unites with HKCEC to fight hunger for charity foundation

ASIA - UBM Asia and Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) have joined forces to support Food Angel’s 'Food Recovery Programme' donating unconsumed food from the organiser's international trade exhibitions held at the centre.

UBM kicked off the donation at the first of its seven events with the recently held show Materials, Manufacturing & Technology 2013, in the spirit of ‘Fight Hunger Donate Food’.

The food rescue and assistance initiative Food Angel was founded in 2011 by the Bo Charity Foundation. Enlisting the help of UBM and HKCEC, the charity aims to reduce food waste at the source, alleviate hunger, relieve poverty and educate the next generation.

The venue has participated in the program since July 2011 and donated unconsumed food collected from dinner buffet and banquets. Chefs froze the collected food in high speed chillers. The collected food is then reheated in Food Angel's central kitchen and distributed to low-income families and the elderly in Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin Districts through charity organisations Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Salvation Army.

"We are committed to be at the forefront of efforts to ensure continuous sustainability development and care for our community," said HKCEC’s MD Monica Lee-Muller. "We are delighted to have the full support from UBM Asia, a globally renowned exhibition organiser and a long term customer of the HKCEC, for the food recovery programme. “Our partnership sets a pioneering example for venue operators and event organisers' contribution to the underprivileged. We hope to motivate other organisers to join this meaningful programme and our other sustainability and CSR initiatives."

UBM Asia had also supported Food Angel before where staff collected unopened packages of candies, cookies, chocolates, instant noodles, tea bags and other preserved food to Food Angel in February.

Earlier this month, HKCEC attracted five new exhibitions among its event offerings for 2013.
