UK Olympic Cauldron designer gets keynote honours at WAF

ASIA - The World Architecture Festival in Singapore will be opened by the designer of the Olympic Cauldron, Thomas Heatherwick.

The 5th World Architecture Festival (WAF) opens on 3 October at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, celebrating and sharing architectural excellence.

The festival, which is expected to attract 1,700 visitors, gives architects, suppliers and their clients access to an exhibition, programme of presentations, seminars and keynote addresses from international participants.

The event’s focal point is the WAF Awards, one of the largest architectural awards programmes in the world, which fields entrants ranging from renowned global architectural firms to small local practices.

The seminar and keynote programme features discussions and debate from more than 80 thought-defining speakers on topics such as ‘Designing for Tomorrow’, ‘Focused Global Forums’ and ‘Sector Trend Forums’.

Heatherwick, founder of Heatherwick Studio and most recently responsible for the Olympic Cauldron that took centre stage at London 2012’s opening ceremony this summer, will be joined by the designer of the Festival venue, Moshe Safdie, as well as Austrian architect Wolf D Prix and Malawi-born architect, writer and critic Peter Buchanan.

Heatherwick Studio also created the Seed Cathedral, the UK pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
