i2i Events goes electric with first purchase

WORLD - i2i Events Group has swooped to make the global Coil Winding, Insulation and Electrical Manufacturing Exhibitions (CWIEME) portfolio its first purchase under its new guise.

The deal will see it now operate in a new industry sector and new international markets. The portfolio comprises CWIEME exhibitions in Germany, China, India and USA and the Inductica Conferences.

The group was formerly Emap Connect, Emap's exhibition, large-scale conferences and events division. It accounted for 44 per cent of the total group’s turnover, but now operates as a separate business.

“This is our first acquisition and marks the beginning of an exciting period of international development at i2i,” said i2i Events Group chief executive Mark Shashoua.

“We are excited at the prospect of working with customers to build on the success of existing events through excellent content and targeted marketing, and to launch new events where the market needs them most.”

CWIEME Berlin was established in 1996 and rapidly grew to become the world’s largest international exhibition of its type serving the industrial technology niche of components for electric motors and transformers.

It is seen as a growing $50bn market with buyers concentrated in the automotive, energy and consumer electronics sectors. Coils and magnets are at the heart of every electric motor and almost every electrical appliance has a coil.

CWIEME was privately owned and run by Timothy and Joanne House. Timothy launched CWIEME Berlin as an annual event in 1996, adding Chicago in 2008, Mumbai in 2009 and Shenzhen in 2012.

“I am confident that the CWIEME portfolio has a great future as part of i2i Events Group,” said CWIEME managing director and founder Timothy House.

“With years of continuous growth and an established track record of success, future editions of CWIEME exhibitions will benefit hugely from the i2i infrastructure and the access to new markets that this will bring.”

More than 700 exhibitors from some 40 countries take part in the annual Berlin event covering over 13,00 sqm of space. CWIEME Shenzhen was launched as a joint venture with VNU in 2012.

The Indian edition was established in Mumbai in 2009 but moves to Bangalore for 2012 to better target the Indian manufacturing and technology industries and CWIEME Chicago takesplace every two years.

The group appointed a new head of China as part of its growth strategy.
