Javits centre updates technology capability

AMERICAS - The Jacob K Javits Convention Center in New York is installing additional telecommunications services to improve its technological capabilities.

The development adds to the venue’s recent US$1m infrastructure investment of wireless arrays and core switches.

A spokesman for the venue said these service enhancements will further improve the Center’s technological capabilities as it moves towards completion of its current renovation and scheduled upgrades.

Enhancements include free Wi-Fi service in select areas; installation of a permanent cell phone distributed antenna system; and the upgrade of the single DS3 connection with a dedicated 100 Mbps of internet/VoIP bandwidth that will replace the 45 Mbps of internet/phone bandwidth.

The free Wi-Fi service is intended for simple applications such as web browsing and e-mail viewing, but will not support video streaming, downloading and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). The new internet/VoIP connection service should be ready by August 2012.

Director of show services at Javits, Marko Kostovic, said the telecommunications and wireless enhancements are necessary upgrades. “Our clients have a much greater need for enhanced communication capabilities than they did just a few years ago and we’re committed to providing them with the best service possible here at the Javits Center”, he said.

George Little Management president Alan Steel was appointed president and CEO at the Javits centre in February.
