Messe Munich creates companion event for Automatica

EUROPE - Messe Munich International’s Automatica will feature a new event this year with the launch of ‘Battery Manufacturing and Automation Technology’.

According to a spokesman for Messe Munich, soaring petrol costs and pressure from consumers, industry and politicians, is driving demand for affordable alternatives. As a result, automation and mechatronics exhibition Automatica is now accommodating exhibitors and visitors focused on the key issue for electric mobility - battery production.
Battery Manufacturing and Automation Technology is being organised in collaboration with the special ‘Productronic’ division of German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and the laboratory for machine tools and production engineering at the Rhineland-Westphalia Technical University in Aachen.

Twenty leading companies from the automation industry and battery mechanical engineering sector are scheduled to use the platform to demonstrate the cheap production of batteries.

Electric energy storage devices and in particular high-capacity batteries, play a key role in electric mobility because they have a decisive influence on the performance, reliability and price of the system.

Eric Maiser, deputy MD of VDMA Productronic and head of the battery production industry group in the VDMA E-Motive forum, emphasised the contribution of battery production engineering to market success.

"Driving electric cars is fun; the inner workings of the 400 HP electric racing cars, which we are showing at the special exhibition, provide you with a glimpse of this. Previous innovations in battery technology have produced acceptable ranges for purely electric cars and fuel cost reductions. We now need innovation in production to cut costs; this is a task for mechanical engineering."

Automatica takes place on the grounds of the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 22 to 25 May 2012

In other Messe Munich news, the organiser recently confirmed the 2013 edition of its construction exhibition BAU will feature a brand new orientation system based on themes.
