UBM acquires South American railway exhibition

AMERICAS - UBM has acquired South American railway industry exhibition Negocios nos Trilhos for an undisclosed sum.

The annual trade show in Sao Paolo was the property of publishing and events firm, Grupo Revista Ferroviaria.  Last year’s show attracted 180 exhibitors from 14 countries along with 7,000 railways professionals, and generated revenues of £1.6m. The next edition is due to be held from 6 to 8 November 2012.

UBM said Negocios nos Trilhos is a complementary fit with its Intermodal transport exhibition in Brazil, which last ran from 10 to 12 April, and overlaps with UBM Global Trade’s US rail industry products. The business’ gross assets were £700,000 and the acquisition is expected to exceed UBM’s cost of capital criterion in its first full year of ownership.

“Negocios nos Trilhos will strengthen our position in the transport sector in Brazil and complement UBM’s US-based rail industry product set,”  UBM Live CEO Simon Foster said. “We are delighted to have acquired such a well-established and market-leading exhibition in this fast-growing industry.”

According to UBM, the passenger and cargo railway industry in Brazil and across South America is expanding rapidly as the region’s economic development advances. Investment is also being made in mass transport systems as a result of the country hosting the World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016.

UBM has appointed Dame Helen Alexander as its new chair from May.
