San Diego Convention Centre head quashes retirement rumours

AMERICAS - The head of San Diego Convention Centre Corp has officially denied that she plans to retire, after a letter seemingly indicating her intention to leave was sent to the board.

Carol Wallace, who says her letter was misconstrued, sought to clarify her position in a formal statement, according to the U-T San Diego newspaper.

Wallace’s letter was sent to Nikki Clay, chairwoman of the convention center board, earlier this month. In it, she reportedly said she planned to bring the “termination” of her contract to the board’s executive committee at its next meeting.

Wallace subsequently told the paper that despite what appeared to be a resignation letter, she has no intention of leaving her position, but did acknowledge that her future with the organisation is under discussion.

“It is unfortunate that confidential San Diego Convention Center Corporation documents, including my personal letter to the corporation’s board of directors, were released publicly,” she said in a statement.

“Characterisations in the media that I have resigned are inaccurate. In my letter, I acknowledge that I believe ‘a number of the board members desire to make a change in the leadership of the corporation’, she continued. Her letter stated that she intended to "assist in the seamless transition of the Convention Centersales and marketing", expected to be complete by 30 June, 2013.

“As I clearly state in the letter, my future role at the corporation after that date “is the subject of further discussion” between myself and the board.”
