Helsinki centre reduces unsorted waste to just six per cent

EUROPE - More than 90 per cent of waste at the Helsinki Exhibition and Convention Centre (HECC) is now recycled, with the venue hoping to hit a target of 95 per cent next year.

Back in 2007, 56 per cent of waste was recycled, but by 2011, the figure rose to 94 per cent.

The HECC is the first Finnish exhibition and conference centre to receive ISO 14001 environmental management certification for its environmental management system.

An environmental survey led to three primary environmental goals for the HECC’s operations, reducing the waste load, optimising energy consumption and promoting the use of public transport.

“Today, sorting of waste is possible at all facilities of the centre,” said HECC property manager Lasse Willberg. “In addition, we have managed to control energy consumption regardless of major investments in new premises.”

The HECC last year completed work on a new 15,000sqm hall at a cost of EUR30m (US$41.3m)
