Singapore airshow launches pavilion for UAV and recon aircraft

ASIA – The 2012 edition of the biennial Singapore Airshow, which begins tomorrow, will feature a new pavilion showcasing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms.

The Singapore event, one of the world’s leading air shows, takes place on 14-19 February at the Changi Exhibition Centre, and features 900 exhibitors from 50 countries and 266 delegations from 80 nations.

Representatives from 60 of the top 100 aerospace companies are expected to attend, with 20 airline and industry association CEOs slated to come, according to organiser Experia Events.

This year the event will feature an integrated land defence and unmanned systems pavilion, the first of its kind according to Experia, showcasing UAVs, ISR platforms and high-tech land-based defence products and technologies.

Also among the 22 national/group pavilions spread throughout the event’s 50,000sqm of covered exhibition space, will be Japan and Ukraine pavilions for the first time.

The green pavilion will also make a return this year, with a focus on alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions.

Visitors to the event will see 65 of the latest military aircraft, passenger airliners and luxury business jets, on display across 100,000sqm of outdoor exhibition space. The star display this year will be the Boeing 787 Dreamliner (pictured), making its first appearance in Singapore.

Last year’s Dubai Airshow witnessed a resurgence in the aerospace industry, with final numbers up and an order book of US$63.3bn, more than four times greater than the previous event in 2009 (US$14bn).
