India jewellery show tightens security after 2010 theft

INDIA – The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) claims to have increased security six-fold at this year’s India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) after last year’s event, in which thieves stole 6.6 crore (US$1.5m) of jewellery from exhibitors.

New security measures include security cameras on every stall, increased security staff, stricter entrance policies and scanners at the doors. Exhibitors have also hired private security guards to watch their stands.

“Visitors would not just be checked at entry as well as exit points. They would have to go through four layers of security checks before entering and exiting the fair,” GJEPC vice chairman Sanjay Kothari told Express India.

The show takes place from 4 to 8 August 2011 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai.

On 23 August 2010, four foreign nationals stole diamonds from a Hong Kong-based jewellery company, exhibiting at IIJS, who were later arrested in Dubai.

Earlier this year, four diamonds worth millions of dollars were stolen from international watch and jewellery show Baselworld. Last year, thieves also stole US$1m of gems from UBM Asia’s Hong Kong International Jewellery and Gem Fair.
