Barcelona launches green city building expo

SPAIN – Fira Barcelona is launching an event aimed at uniting city planners and designers with solution providers of sustainable infrastructure.

Smart City takes place at the venue and organiser's Gran Via halls from 29 November to December 2, aimed at creating a better quality of life through sustainable city development.

A spokesman for the company said innovation and technology are the drivers of a smart society, and that it was important that businesses tackle high consumption of renewable resources, economic development, ageing populations and ageing infrastructures.

The event caters primarily for six sectors of sustainable civic development, namely: energy and sustainability; mobility and transportation; environment and recycling; ICT and research; urban planning and cities.

Fira Barcelona commercial manager Pedro Luis Sanchez Macias told EW that Barcelona was a suitable location for the exhibition because of its “long history with industrial tradition and strong entrepreneurial fabric”.

“Barcelona has for a long time advocated advanced services and new economic activities,” he added.

Macias added that the Smart City already has the backing of major sponsors Cisco, Accenture, Siemens and a variety of public sector authorities.

The event will be accompanied by the Smart City World Congress, a large conference including keynote speakers, a round table and presentations from delegates from other cities involved in sustainable development.

Next month Fira Barcelona is hosting The Brandery, a fashion event that attracts 250 designers and more than 60,000 visitors.
