Quake-damaged Chinese school re-built with UBM donation

CHINA – A school in China affected by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake has been reconstructed with the help of a HK$248,000 (US$31,860) donation from UBM Asia.

UBM Asia made the donation to Salvation Army Hong Kong and Macau Command to help the 2008 Sichuan earthquake survivors rebuild the Caoheba Primary School, the only primary school located in Tielou Zang Township, Wen county, Gansu province.

Sichuan and Gansu province were hit by a major earthquake on 12 May 2008, leaving hundreds of school buildings damaged. Wen county was one of the most seriously affected areas.

Construction completed last month and the 100 students have now returned to classes at the new school.

UBM Asia president and CEO Jimé Essink said: “UBM is delighted to be one of the major donors of the project and assist the children get back to normal life. Our support will also rebuild their lives by helping them to study and grow in a happy and healthy way.”

The fund supported the reconstruction of the auxiliary facilities in the earthquake. An enclosing wall and school gate were also constructed alongside new grounds and fully-equipped toilets.
