Thai Government builds new venues outside capital

THAILAND ROADSHOW NEWS – The Thai Government is constructing two venues in the north and south of the country to expand its exhibitions and conventions market beyond the capital Bangkok.

In the north of the country, construction is underway in Chiang Mai for a new venue offering 10,000sqm of exhibition space. The venue, due for completion in 2012, will have a strong convention and congress bias, however exhibitions are being factored in as an integral element of success.

Meanwhile, Phuket in the south of the country and one hour’s flight from Bangkok, will be home to a new 30,000sqm venue due to open in 2015.

Thailand currently has just one purpose-built exhibition venue outside the capital, PEACH in Pattaya (pictured), located in the south. Other exhibition venues exist outside Bangkok but are located on - and managed by - academic campuses.

The construction of the two new venues is a marked deviation from previous venue models, as they will be owned and managed by the Government. Existing Thai venues, while promoted by public-sector body the Thailand Conventions and Exhibitions Bureau (TCEB), are privately owned and managed.

UBM recently acquired the business and assets of AMB Exhibitions and AMB Events in Southeast Asia on behalf of UBM Asia.
